The definition of “parquet”, for many people, is probably not too clear, and probably something they heard their parents talking about. But lately the term has been resurfacing, for very good reasons.
So what IS parquet? Many people in the U.S. who have heard of parquet flooring are either interested in interior design or basketball fans. One of the most famous parquet floors in the country was, until recently, being constantly battered by the Boston Celtics in the Boston Garden. The original floor had been moved from the Boston Arena in 1946, and it was named as the reason for many of the Celtics’ championship wins—the many perpendicular pieces of wood meant that the ball reacted different to each section of the floor and gave the Celtics a true “home court” advantage. The court floor was disassembled in 1999 and sold as souvenirs, but parts of it still live in the new parquet of the TD Boston Garden arena floor.
